Penguins, Peppa Pig and pronunciation

Hello and welcome to our episode 5 of the Lernoase Lounge podcast. Our title for today is Penguins, Peppa Pig and Pronunciation. Before we start with this episode, here are some words from the last episode.

So, our first word is published. Do you remember what published means?

So an example is, when you post something on a website or you print something in a newspaper, then it is published. Published means veröffentlicht. The next word is job advertisement. What is a job advertisement? So you can also call it an ad or an advert. So you can find them especially in newspapers, where you can read about a job. In German we call them Stellenanzeigen.

And the last word from the last episode is prison. This is a place where criminals stay. A prison is a Gefängnis in German.

And that was it with the words from the last episode. In this episode we want to talk about pronunciation and we want to give you some tips for learning English with visual media. Music

Emanuela, weißt du, was am 25. April ist? Nein, sag mal.

Da ist der Welt-Pinguin-Tag. Wir haben dazu tatsächlich auch einen Post bei Instagram, also könnt ihr gerne reingucken, wenn ihr das möchtet. Und immer, wenn ich das Wort Pinguin irgendwo lese oder höre, muss ich an ein Video denken, eine Dokumentation, wo Benedict Cumberbatch versucht, das Wort Pinguin auszusprechen. Kennst du den Schauspieler? Weißt du, wer das ist?

Das ist der von Sherlock, richtig? Genau, also von der BBC-Serie Sherlock, da spielt er den Sherlock. Aber er ist Muttersprachler, er ist Brite, oder nicht?

Genau, der ist Brite und es gibt quasi, also es gibt von der Graham Norton Show einen Zusammenschnitt, wo die aus dieser Dokumentation, er hat dort das Voice-Over gemacht, rausgeschnitten haben, wann er überall versucht, Penguin ist das englische Wort, das zu sagen. Und das wird von Mal zu Mal schlimmer. Wir verlinken euch diesen Clip in den Shownotes. Ich finde, das muss man gesehen haben. Das ist wirklich lustig. Also ich finde, das ist wirklich lustig. Naja, vor allem, ja, es zeigt halt auch immer wieder, dass natürlich die Aufsprache eine schwierige Sache ist, nicht nur für Englischlerner, sondern tatsächlich auch für Muttersprachler. Genau, also es ist halt nicht ganz so einfach. Und ich fand das sehr beruhigend, als ich das gesehen habe das erste Mal, weil ich so dachte, okay, also wenn Benedict Cumberbatch mit einem Wortproblem hat, dann ist es auch nicht so schlimm, wenn ich manchmal Sachen falsch ausspreche.

Definitiv, ja.

Genau. Um so ein paar Wörter, die schwer auszusprechen sind oder wo es unterschiedliche Aussprachen gibt, je nachdem, als was das Wort benutzt wird, soll es auch im nächsten Part gehen. Und zwar habe ich ein kleines Quiz mitgebracht und damit beschäftigen wir uns jetzt.

Die erste Frage in unserem Quiz ist, liebe Emanuela, wie wird das Wort Yacht auf Englisch ausgesprochen?

Das fiese ist, es gibt auch im Englischen verschiedene Aussprachen. Im amerikanischen Englisch würden wir sagen Yacht. Da ist das CH komplett stumm. Wird genauso geschrieben wie im Deutschen. Yacht, ja, American English, Yacht. Ich glaube, du kennst aber noch eine andere Aussprache, Anne.

Also ich würde Jot sagen. Auch da ist das CH stumm und man hört es nicht, aber das A wird tiefer gesprochen. Also Jot.

Gut, dann gibt es noch ein anderes Wort, was wir alle kennen. Und zwar kennen wir alle wait a minute. Wo minute als Substantiv verwendet wird und Minute bedeutet. Aber minute kann auch genauso geschrieben, aber etwas anderes bedeuten. Und zwar kann es als winzig oder exakt auch übersetzt werden. Dann ändert sich allerdings die Aussprache.

Anne, wie wird es dann ausgesprochen, wenn ich winzig oder exakt ausdrücken möchte mit diesem Wort? Ja, dann würde ich sagen, minute. Also zum Beispiel, this is a minute animal. Das ist ein winziges Tier.

Es gibt noch mehr Wörter im Englischen, die gleich geschrieben werden, aber je nachdem, ob sie als Adjektiv, Verb oder Substantiv verwendet werden, eine unterschiedliche Aussprache haben. Und die dritte und letzte Frage in unserem Quiz ist, liebe Emanuela.

Das englische Wort für perfekt, das kann ja als Adjektiv und als Verb verwendet werden, als Verb dann perfektionieren, wird genau gleich geschrieben im Englischen. Das Adjektiv heißt perfect. Wie wird es als Verb ausgesprochen?

Also, wenn ich darüber rede, etwas zu perfektionieren, dann würde ich sagen to perfect. Also, die Betonung liegt dann auf der zweiten Silbe.

Something is perfect. Erste Silbe. Es ist perfekt. Und I want to perfect something. Ich möchte etwas perfektionieren.

Genau. Und wenn ihr euch jetzt fragt, woher soll ich denn wissen, wie eine Sache ausgesprochen wird, wenn sie doch genau gleich geschrieben wird, dann bleibt dran, wir haben jetzt als nächstes Tipps für euch, wie ihr mit Filmen und Serien und Podcasts und Musik Englisch lernen könnt, beziehungsweise dort auch hören könnt, wie bestimmte Wörter ausgesprochen werden.

Aber davor erklären wir euch noch, welche Vokabeln ihr braucht, um den nächsten Teil gut verstehen zu können. Musik

Die wichtigen Wörter für den nächsten Teil sind Recommend, das bedeutet empfehlen und Recommendation ist das Substantiv dazu und heißt die Empfehlung. Repeat heißt wiederholen und the general meaning of something ist die allgemeine Bedeutung oder die grobe Bedeutung von etwas.

A YouTube Channel ist ein YouTube-Kanal. Und Fairy Tale setzt sich zusammen aus dem Wort Fairy, das bedeutet Fee, und Tale, das ist eine Erzählung. Und die Erzählung über Feen ergibt dann zusammengesetzt das englische Wort für Märchen, also Fairy Tale heißt Märchen. Challenging heißt herausfordernd. The Challenge ist die Herausforderung.

Subtitles setzt sich zusammen aus dem Wort Sub für unter und Titles für Titel, also sind das die Untertitel. Und Law bedeutet Gesetz oder Recht. Musik

If you are a beginner, so A1, A2 level, you can just watch kids shows such as Bluey and Peppa Pig. You can watch them together with your children in English, of course. So it helps you and your children at the same time to learn English.

And of course, you can also listen to our Lenoase Lounge podcast. That's what makes our podcast so special, that we are focusing on English learners, so we speak slowly and clearly. That's what you also get when you watch kids shows.

They often repeat the same words, they speak slowly, they use easy language. And you know, you should not try to understand every single word. If you understand the general meaning, that's already fantastic. You do not have to understand every single word. Und wenn du auf YouTube gehen möchtest, um einige Dinge zu sehen und du ein oder zwei Level hast, dann können wir dir den Kanal The Fable Cottage empfehlen. Dies ist ein Kanal, der sich auf Fairytales mit einem modernen Twist konzentriert. Or you could watch some vlogs about things that you're interested in. Gardening vlogs, cooking vlogs, some sports vlogs.

So that way you can learn words that are important for you personally.

So, for higher levels such as B1, B2, my all time favorite is Friends. I always recommend the series Friends because they speak very clearly, their accents are very neutral, they use everyday life vocabulary and it's very easy to understand. It's short episodes, 20-25 minutes long

Very easy to watch, very funny and entertaining. And another funny series is Modern Family. You have some different accents there, so it's maybe a little bit more challenging, but definitely also a good place to start. And a good place to start is also The Good Place, which is also a series. Anne, do you have some more ideas or tips?

My YouTube recommendations are... I love watching videos from The Great British Bake Off because it’s funny. It’s just funny, that’s it. And I also love watching interviews with actors, actresses, and musicians. Because it’s interesting and you learn by asking questions, and you should learn by giving answers. So I think that’s a good format to use. Then I can recommend the YouTube channel Learn English with TV Series. You’ll find the link in the show notes. On this channel, they take clips from movies and TV shows, give you subtitles for the clips, explain important words, and also ask you questions to keep you engaged.

So, this is a really good channel. And last but not least, if you like podcasts, the BBC has one called Six Minute English, where they talk about all kinds of topics. Each episode is just six minutes long, which makes it perfect for listening to in between things.

So, for the C1 level I would like to recommend three TV shows. The first one is the BBC show Sherlock. The second one is the show Doctor House. And the third one is the TV show Suits. And what they have in common is that they use very specific vocabulary. So for Sherlock you need vocabulary like um die Themen Verbrechen, Verbrechen und Verbrechen. Für Dr. House braucht man medizinisches Vokabular und für Suits braucht man Vokabular um die Themen Gesetz und legalen Probleme.

So, if you have a TV show that focuses on these sort of topics, then you can learn words that you might not learn in your English class or from everyday live TV shows.

Another show I would like to recommend is the Graham Norton Show. So that's a popular British comedy talk show on BBC One, hosted by Graham Norton. And he invites more than one person. It's usually, I think, three or four guests. And they are actors, actresses, singers, musicians. So they come from different backgrounds and they have different accents. And they talk together. It's a talk show, obviously. So yeah, that's also a good place to listen to different accents and pronunciations.
