Herzlich willkommen zurück bei der Lernoase Lounge.

Wir freuen uns, dass ihr wieder eingeschaltet habt und sind heute wieder da mit einem neuen Thema.

Aber bevor wir damit starten, wollen wir gerne nochmal kurz die Wörter von der letzten Folge wiederholen oder zumindest einige davon.

Emmanuela, was für ein Wort fällt dir ein, worüber wir in der letzten Folge gesprochen haben?

Improve.

Okay, wisst ihr noch, was improve war?

Wir können kurz überlegen. Wir machen immer eine kleine Pause nach den Wörtern.

Das zweite Wort ist give up.

Und das dritte?

Oats. Sink. Quit.

Okay. Wenn ihr jetzt denkt, oh, ich habe ein Wort vergessen oder ich bin mir gar nicht mehr sicher, ähm, was diese Wörter bedeuten, macht euch keine Sorgen.

Wir wiederholen sie jetzt nochmal mit den jeweiligen Übersetzungen.

Emmanuela, was war die Übersetzung von deinem ersten Wort?

Ja, mein erstes Wort war improve und das heißt verbessern.

Mhm. Das zweite Wort war give up und das heißt aufgeben.

Das dritte Wort war oats, das heißt Hafer oder Haferflocken.

Und sink ist das Waschbecken.

And quit. Aufgeben, aufhören.

Das waren Wörter aus der letzten Folge New Year's Resolutions und das Thema für diese Folge ist Valentine's Day.

Wenn ihr diese Folge hört, ist der Valentine's Day schon vorbei.

Der war ja am 14. Februar, aber ihr könnt euch bestimmt trotzdem ein paar Infos mitnehmen und die dann vielleicht im nächsten Jahr verwenden.

Und wir starten wieder wie immer mit den wichtigen Wörtern für den ersten Part.

Truth. Something that is true. Wahrheit.

A priest works in a church and is called Priester in German.

Lie. Something that is not true. Lüge.

To guess. If you don't know the answer, you can guess.

It means raten in German.

Pharmacist.

Pharmacy.

A pharmacist works at a pharmacy and sells medicine.

Apotheker.

Apotheker.

Okay, dear Emmanuela, I want to play a game with you.

This game is called Two Truths, One Lie.

I'll say three sentences and you have to guess which one of these is a lie.

Okay, let's go.

The topic is obviously St. Valentine's Day.

The first sentence is, Legend says that St. Valentine's Day was a priest who was killed for marrying young soldiers against the emperor's will.

The second sentence is, The oldest known Valentine's Day card was written by Shakespeare.

And the third sentence is, Candy hearts are based on medicine.

Now, I do not know if all of our listeners know what candy hearts are.

They are little heart-shaped sugar pills, so to say.

Like they are heart candy.

Very sweet.

And they have little messages on them.

And they are very popular in the US, I think.

Okay, so let me guess.

So, number one, the legend about the priest who was called St. Valentine.

I think that could be true.

Number two, the oldest known Valentine's Day card was written by Shakespeare.

I think that could also be true.

And I think the lie is sentence number three.

Candy hearts are based on medicine.

All right.

Thank you for your guess.

Let's have a look.

So, you said the first one is probably true.

That there is a legend about this priest.

And you are right about this.

There are a lot of legends about St. Valentine.

Which is partly because we have at least three St. Valentines.

Three different people in different time periods.

And that's why there are so many stories about them.

So, number one is true.

Number two, the oldest known card was written by Shakespeare.

Valentine's Day card was written by Shakespeare.

That sounds very reasonable, but is actually the lie.

Yeah.

So, this one is wrong.

Although I think that Shakespeare probably wrote very beautiful Valentine's Day cards.

But the oldest one was written by Charles the Duke of Orleans to his wife.

Charles was imprisoned in the Tower of London.

And he sent her a poem.

A love poem.

Okay.

So, number three is actually true.

Candy hearts are based on medicine.

Yes.

That is true.

So, in the 19th century, it was very popular to mix medicine with a sugar paste.

Right.

Because medicine is bitter and sugar is sweet.

And it goes down better when you mix it.

And one pharmacist created a machine that cut this sugar paste and made the process easier.

And he decided that he wants to switch from the pharmacy business to the candy business.

And then later he created the candy hearts.

So, yes.

Candy hearts are in fact based on medicine.

Interesting.

All right.

That was two truth, one lie.

And now let's continue with part two.

And the words you will need for that.

Heel or heels.

Part at the back of the foot.

Ferse.

Auch benutzt als Abkürzung für High Heels.

To tie.

I tie my shoes.

Binden or zubinden.

Knot.

A join made by tying together the ends of a piece or pieces of string or rope.

Knoten.

Sleeve.

My shirt has long sleeves.

Ärmel.

Absence.

When something is not there, it is missing or absent.

Abwesenheit.

To be fond of someone or something.

I am very fond of animals.

Etwas mögen.

So, for our part two, we are going to look at some proverbs and idioms about love.

So, we collected a few typical proverbs and idioms in English that have something to do with love.

The first one is to have a crush.

Anne, can you explain what that means?

When you have a crush on someone, you are in love with this person.

There are also two similar things.

So, you can say, I am crushing on a person.

That also means you are in love with them.

And when you are very, very much in love with someone, you can say, I am crushing hard on that person.

So, that is the first one.

And the second one is to be head over heels.

Emmanuela, what does that mean?

That means when you are madly in love, you are crazy in love, then you are head over heels.

Alright, I see.

The next one is to tie the knot.

Oh yeah, well, when you tie the knot, you are getting married to someone.

That means tying the knot.

And I am sure there is a story behind that.

But I do not know the story.

I am not familiar.

Emanuela, do you know the story behind tie the knot?

Why it is called tying the knot?

No, unfortunately, I don't.

I will have to look it up.

Yeah, maybe we can figure that out until the next episode.

Okay.

Oh, the next one is, oh, I like that one.

To wear your heart on your sleeve.

Oh yes, I really love that one too.

So, when you wear your heart on your sleeve, you are a very open person.

So, you make your feelings and emotions obvious rather than hiding them.

You are a very honest person, a very open person when it comes to your feelings.

Are you a person who wears her heart on her sleeve?

Yes, actually, I think in general, I don't really hide my emotions.

And also, I don't have a poker face.

So, you can immediately tell how I feel about a person or a situation.

I cannot hide my feelings.

So, it can be good, but it can also be bad in some situations.

What about you?

Yeah, that depends.

Hmm, I think I, like, I don't often wear my heart on my sleeve, but sometimes.

It differs daily, so to say.

Okay.

All right.

The next one, Anne, is also an interesting one.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Oh, I love that one.

This means that you often really appreciate something once it is gone and you have no access to it.

So, if a person is not close to you, physically close to you, but they, I don't know, maybe they go on a trip to another country and you can't see them for two weeks or so.

So, then you miss them a lot and that makes the heart grow fonder.

So, that is what this idiom means.

I see.

Right, and the last one is, I think it's the most popular one in this little collection.

It's all is fair in love and war.

What does that mean?

Right, so that basically means that there are no rules in love and war.

Where everything is fair.

I mean, everything is valid in love and war.

Do you agree?

Not in war, but in love.

So, partly, I do partly agree.

What about you?

I'm with you on this one.

Alright, so, alright, that were the Proverbs and Idioms.

Auf die Kanareninsel im Sommer 2026.

Nämlich Mitte Juni.

Da fliegen wir gemeinsam eine Woche nach Lanzarote.

Denn da findet ein ganz besonderes Event statt.

Nämlich der Wine Run.

Das ist eine Wanderung durch die Weinberge gepaart mit einer Weinverköstigung.

Das heißt, man geht immer mal ein paar Kilometer, stoppt dann und trinkt dann ein Gläschen Wein.

Also es ist schon was sehr Besonderes.

Die Sprachreise geht, wie gesagt, insgesamt eine Woche.

Da sehen wir natürlich auch einiges von der Insel und sprechen natürlich auch Spanisch.

Und außerdem wird es auch dieses Jahr wieder eine Irland-Rundreise geben.

Die findet vom 30.04. bis zum 14.05. statt.
